It's funny how little acts of thoughtfulness, kindness, and understanding can really pack a powerful punch.
My 11-year-olds new teacher created a visual timetable for her and sent it to me, so we can print it out at home and orient her for her school day. There will also be a copy at school.
It is perfect.
It tells her what is happening, what she is expected to do (and in what order) and is in clear and simple language.
I have come over all emotional like. One week into a brand-new school and the teaching staff have already grasped that understanding the school day and what is required of her is something our child finds difficult - and they came up with a solution.
I am not having to explain it or do the training or undertake the work myself or manage anyone else’s feelings but my own.
Will it solve everything? Probably not. Will it help? Absolutely! Will our child always need it? I really couldn't say. But she sure liked reading it.,
Hi Bex. Your experience with your new school made me feel all warm and fuzzy for you and your daughter. All it takes is putting people first, eh - all people, not just the ones that fit the system!
Hi Bex You might like the 'choice works' app for home. Its a combo of pecs and timetables and has the bonus of being able to swipe when the activity is finished to move on to the next. Although, the point of your story here is how nice it is when someone else makes the effort and comes up with a solution, right? It's amazing what a difference that makes, instead of getting told what you could do.
